Kayleen Wilkinson reading and discussion

Wells alumna Kayleen Wilkinson ’10 will give the first-ever reading at the newly-reopened Dorie’s. The hope is to make Dorie’s a coffee-house venue for future readings by students as well as visiting writers.

Kayleen Wlikinson was the first Wells student to have work published in The Healing Muse. Her nonfiction essay, “Disappearing Act,” about her ultimate triumph over a life-threatening eating disorder, was published in the 2009 issue of The Healing Muse while she was a Senior. She will read from “Disappearing Act,” but will also present new work, which represents a different perspective on the problems introduced in that essay and a further thinking through of the issues involved. She will talk as well about how her material might be adapted to dance, the stage, and video. The reading will begin at 7:30pm at Dorie’s. – Submitted by Bruce Bennett, brbennett

Readings from the just-published issue of The Healing Muse by Editors and several writers and Wells students

Nonfiction, fiction, and poetry from the just-published 13th issue of The Healing Muse will be read by Editors of the magazine and several writers with work in the issue. There will also be readings by two Wells students.

THE HEALING MUSE is the annual journal of literary and visual art published by SUNY Upstate Medical University’s Center for Bioethics & Humanities.

Deirdre Neilen, Editor-in-Chief, wrote in her Editor’s Note to the current issue:

… This issue of The Healing Muse contains the consolations afforded by memory and art. Once again our writers and artists have shared with us powerful images of lives navigating the country of illness and the world of loss. The journey is often fraught with peril and laden with uncertainty. It forces us to accept the unimaginable and to (in the words of founding editor’s Bonnie St. Andrews’ poem) “join forces with/ allies I neither know nor trust.” As our issue attests, courage and imagination are steadfast companions and can help us both to remember what was and to shape what will be….

Refreshments will be served following the reading, and copies of THE HEALING MUSE will be available.

There is a display of issues of THE HEALING MUSE in the Wells College Library. This event will begin at 7pm in the AER. – Submitted by Bruce Bennett, brbennett
