Dear Students,

You are invited to attend “Wide Angle,” a free performance installation in the String Room Gallery this Friday evening, February 3rd, from 5:00-8:00pm. Come whenever you can, and stay as long as you’d like!

“Wide Angle” examines different views of the world from a classroom in Washington State to a kava circle in Hawaii to a family folk dance in Hungary to the very close campus of Wells College. It visually, interactively, and
aurally explores items and people from views that are up close and very, very far away. The exhibit features photography, 2-D and 3-D art, and film. Live performances include dance, theatre and music.

Wide Angle is the result of a collaboration between Easter, Professor of Dance Jeanne Goddard, Technical Director Joe DeForest and Professor of Anthropology Ernie Olson, along with contributing student artists Marie Angus ’12, Keegan
Evans ’15, Mary Losurdo ’14, Jeremiah Miller ’14, Alexi Montgomery ’13, Claudia Nolan ’12, and Doug Whaley ’12.

Hope to see you there!

Tuesday, February 7, 2012

“Civil Liberties and Civil Rights”

2. Scholarship and Engagement Day-Women & Gender

Dear Wells Students,

The second of our 5 new “Scholarship and Engagement Days” will be on Thursday, February 23rd and the theme will be “Access,” There will be a keynote speaker in the morning speaking on disability rights and awareness, sessions following where students, staff and faculty are sharing their work and thoughts on issues of access, and then films with discussions facilitated by student/staff/faculty panels in the afternoon.

We are looking for students that have things to say about “Access” in the broadest sense of the word– access in education, housing, sports, music, science, physical access to spaces, financial access, access to marriage and other civil rights, voting, etc etc

If you have thesis work or other scholarship you have done/are doing that relates to these or other access topics AND/OR personal interests and experience you could contribute to the 90 minute sessions we are creating, please contact me as soon as possible. If you need help developing an idea or want to be connected to others interested in a topic, don’t worry, just get in touch now!

We are open to poster sessions, round table discussions, presentations of papers and theses and any other forms of dialogue and discussion–out ultimate goal is to raise awareness of how access/lack of access shapes ours and others lives and to have in-depth discussions about those issues. Contact me at lhall@wells.edu and have a great beginning to the semester!

1. “METROPOLITAN OPERA LIVE TRIPS”

Dear Students, Faculty and Staff,

(Saturdays, Feb 11, 25, April 7, 14, Regal Cinema, Ithaca Mall 14)

The Chinese Language and Culture Club will organize a series of “Metropolitan Opera Live Trips” (to Ithaca
Cinema) this semester. (Although Western opera is not part of Chinese culture, but international students might have special interests in it)

There are 4 upcoming operas, including the new production of Wagner’s Götterdämmerung this spring. We can watch the live performances of these 4 operas in Ithaca Cinema at the same time when the audience in NYC watch them.

We can also see the back stage, interviews with the actors, which the audience in metropolitan theater cannot see.

Another benefit as an audience in cinema is that we can read the English subtitles easily on the screen.

All performances begin around noon time, Saturday. Below is the calendar of the 4 operas.

1. Wagner’s Götterdämmerung – New Production February 11, 2012, 12 pm ET

2. Verdi’s Ernani
February 25, 2012, 12:55 pm ET

3. Massenet’s Manon? New Production
April 7, 2012, 12 pm ET

4. Verdi’s La Traviata
April 14, 2012, 12:55 pm ET

If you’re interested in joining these trips, please contact Prof.Chen at dchen@wells.edu or 617-519-7252.

The website of Metropolitan Live in HD Program is here (or google it):

http://www.metoperafamily.org/metopera/liveinhd/LiveinHD.aspx

You can find “buy tickets” link at the same website:
http://www.metoperafamily.org/metopera/liveinhd/unitedstates.aspx

The cinema we’re going is,

Ithaca Mall 14
40 CATHERWOOD RD
ITHACA, NY 14850
607-257-7611

Please notice that the ticket is not refundable. And if you decide to join our trips, please sign up by Friday for the 10:30am van (to Ithaca Mall) and the returning van according to the length of the performances (you could find this info at the buy ticket page)

For Feb 11, because Wagner’s opera is 6.5 hours, we will take the 7pm van back to Wells.

Please feel free to contact me for any questions.
