36th Susan Garretson Swartzburg Book Arts Lecture
The Wells College Book Arts Center is happy to announce that Nicolas Barker will present “Printing and the Mind of Man: Fifty Years On,” the 36th Susan Garretson Swartzburg Book Arts Lecture at 5:00 pm on Thursday, October 10th. Barker, who was the first head of conservation at the British Library, has been editor of The Book Collector, the world’s only journal on book collecting, since 1965, and he has edited the most recent editions of John Carter’s ABC of Book Collecting.
His talk will focus on the important and enduring role of the 1963 catalogue for the printing exhibits held in London by the International Printing Machinery and Allied Trades Exhibition. The catalogue’s name was "Catalogue of a display of printing mechanisms and printed materials arranged to illustrate the history of Western civilization and the means of the multiplication of literary texts since the 15th century, organized in connection with the eleventh International Printing Machinery and Allied Trades Exhibition, under the title Printing and the Mind of Man, assembled at the British Museum and at Earls Court, London, 16–27 July 1963," but it is usually shortened to "Printing and the Mind of Man," or the even shorter "PMM." We hope you can join us for this exciting event. The talk will be held in Stratton Hall Auditorium at 5:00, and is free and open to the public. We hope to see you all there! – Submitted by Nancy Gil, ngil
